Honjin is by far my favorite sushi spot. I am a sushi lover and frequent the range of sushi restaurants in Vancouver, from Ro Sushi to Tojo’s.

The service is phenomenal, always attentive, caring yet give you the space you need. They ensure you understand how each dish is to be eaten without making you feel stupid or uncouth. Apparently ‘white people’ use way too much soy sauce on and it doesn’t go on everything you know! LOL! The hot cloth to start off by cleaning your hands is a nice touch.

Anyways, the food is better than any other place in Vancouver and almost comparable to Tojo’s. I am sure Tojo’s is far superior from a culinary perspective but from a guy who loves sushi and lacks a well tuned palate I am content with Honjin and save Tojo’s for a twice a year special occasions.

It is not cheap but is also not the 80 – 120 dollars a diner Tojo’s can be. It is about 25- 50 dollars a diner with drinks and tip.

Be sure to try the Tuna Tataki and Caterpillar roll.Food 5

Seriously, this place is the best. I almost prefer it to hojo’s. The have an amazing tuna sauce on the Tuna Tataki that is comparable to hojo’s for a much better price. It might not be as prestigious from a culinary perspective but it certainly is elegant with amazing, fresh ingredients.Food 5

I visited Honjin Sushi at about 9:30pm on Wednesday evening and the place was about half full. The waiter was very friendly and explained to me about how to eat the egg plant with ginger – it has to be mixed with the sauce he said, most people don’t know how to eat it. He was very tactful in the way he said it and I was appreciative. From the Rotaba menu, I ordered Salmon Kama Shioyaki (salmon cheek with salt), Karubi (beef short rib with garlic sauce), and Yaki Nasu (egg plant with ginger sauce). I found it to be a great snack and for about $20 including tax and tip, it was nice to try 3 new things, and not the usual California roll and tempura that occupies most “specials” menus. I’ll definitely be back. I really enjoyed the egg plant. It comes with shaved bonito that melts when it is served. Cool presentation, very tasty in a comfort food sort of way.Food 5

Say what you will about Honjin, their sashimi is the best value in town. The tuna and salmon are indistinguishable in quality to Blue Water, but at half the cost. The patio is also fantastic in the summer, and parking is free if you grab something from Urban Fare across the road.

My favourite thing to order is an off-the-menu special called The Yale. It is a tasty medley of the kappa roll, 1 Inari Pocket, 1 Tuna Nigiri, 1 Salmon Nigiri, and of course the house salad with the dressing on the side. Delicious.Food 5

We were having a family get together on a Friday night and had reserved a table for 7 for 7pm. We had a wait for quite awhile (close to 25 minutes) before we were seated and given the “room” at the back. Upon sitting down, we were given hot hand rolls which was really nice.

We ordered various types of plates and were really happy with it all. I believe it was the North Shore roll that was our favourite (the one with mango on top). I do agree that the Tuna Tataki is excellent too as we also had that.

There was one dish which took a long time to make, I can’t remember the name of it, but it’s the oyster, spinach and mayonnaise cooked in a ramkin dish. So, if you’re going to be ordering that, make sure to to order it right when you sit down and order the rest of your food as you go.

Overall, this place was amazing and I will definitely be stopping by again. The only reason I give the service a 3 is because of the long wait even though we had made a reservation.Food 5
