Discord with HST

Teresa Lee - July 29, 2009

In case you haven’t heard, the BC government will be combining the taxes (PST and GST) into the Harmonization Tax (HST). This new tax of 12%, to be implemented in July 2010, will be applied to all goods and services. This greatly affects restaurant businesses and its patrons, as currently only the GST is applied to your bill. This means consumers may not want to spend the extra cost of dining out, especially when we are just recovering from the recession. Many people and small businesses have already been negatively impacted by the recession. It’s almost foreseeable that as a domino effect, there will be more job loss and closures.

In response to the HST announcement, the BC Restaurant and Food Services Association (BCRFA) have set up an online petition for restaurants and food services operators to sign. You can also read their blog for more information.
