Birthday Food Fanfare part 1

Teresa Lee - June 18, 2009

I hit another milestone this past weekend with the celebration of another birthday. My ‘Asian’ heritage can afford me a few more years without the wrinkles and bless the bars that still ID me. And what better way to mark this day by having food…and lots of it. The variety of lunches and dinners that my friends and family treated me to is a testament to the diverse local culinary scene. Basically I had a 5 day birthday. To avoid making this as long as a novel, here is part 1 for your reading pleasure.

On Thursday night, it was dinner at Joey’s on West Broadway. The service was prompt and courteous, and I think it’s one of the few casual dining restaurants that had equal number of cute waiters and waitresses. We first shared a plate of calamari which I thought lacked the spiciness compared to the other times I’ve ordered it. I thought I should be healthy and get the Baja Tuna Tacos but to my chagrin the tuna and shrimp pieces were deep fried. But it was a fun dish to eat as you try to bite into a lettuce packed goodness without making a mess.

Shaken Not Stirred - Yaletown

Friday night, I met up with my old friends and colleagues at the formerly known Soho/Plan B Eatery and now named Shakin’ Not Stirred. Compared to its predecessors, it has gained a loyal clientele of my ex-coworkers and other local businesses. I think this new establishment is doing well because it blends an atmosphere of casualness with the quintessential Yaletown chic. Also, the menu is filled with tasty finger food that goes well with watching any sports on their big screen tv. Afterwards, my girlfriends and I enjoyed the sunset while walking through downtown and drinking Bubble Tea (sorry, forgotten the name of the Bubble Tea café but it was located along Robson Street near the popular Korean and Japanese restaurant area). It was nearly a 2 hour stroll which I convinced myself helped burned the calories from the drinks I had.

And oh yes there is a part 2, which will detail my dining-a-thon over the weekend
